Blue Sky Infrastructure’s Timberlands Sequestration Project Selected by the U.S. Department of Energy for $23.8 million Award under Phase III of the CarbonSAFE Program

May 17, 2023 – The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) selected the Timberlands Sequestration (TS) Project in Alabama for $23.8 million in funding to support site characterization efforts to develop a biomass carbon removal and storage project for a pulp and paper mill in southern Alabama. The TS Project will be designed to capture approximately 2 million metric tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) from the mill’s flue gas, transport it through a new pipeline, and inject it into deep saline reservoirs at a proposed storage site near the mill.

The DOE grant funding will be used to (i) acquire survey data (seismic and aerial magnetic), (ii) drill a test well and collect rock core, (iii) submit a Class VI permit application, (iv) perform engineering and design across the full project (capture, transport, and storage), and (v) develop a Community Benefits Plan.

Auburn University and the University of Alabama are subrecipients on the grant award. Auburn University will perform the capture plant integration study and The University of Alabama will assist TS with implementation of the Community Benefits Plan.
